VÉRTIGO Y LLAMA

“Vértigo y llama” (Vertigo and Flame) (2018) could be defined as a musical proposal based on the deconstruction of different pre-existing sound-making materials to give them a new use. Its author, José Miguel Fayos-Jordán (Chella, 1980) is an emerging figure of today’s musical creation with very carefully constructed proposals as regards working the sound of the vehicular element. His constant research in this aspect has generated diverse musical proposals, such as the one we present today, where the verses of the Mexican Octavio Paz (1914-1998) and his poem ‘El cántaro roto’ (The Broken Jug) are mixed with quotes from the “Llibre Vermell de Montserrat” (The Red Book of Montserrat) (14th century) as ‘Imperayritz de la ciutat joyosa’ (Empress of the Happy City), giving way to a deconstruction of harmonic spectres that create different sounds that gradually hybridise throughout the whole composition. The idea of the inspirational poem speaks of returning to the origins to link the future, that kind of vital spiral that seeks growth and constant evolution, an allegory of the present of musical bands in contemporary musical culture.

JOSÉ MIGUEL FAYOS-JORDÁN
José Miguel Fayos-Jordan (Valencia, 1980) is a Professor of Composition and Head of Composition at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Castilla-La Mancha (Spain). He studied composition at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Valencia, where he graduated with ‘Special Recognition Award’. He furthered his composition studies with López López, Sánchez-Verdú, Halffter, Bischof, Rueda, Sotelo, Billone, Lazkano, Cendo and Haas, although the person who has contributed most to his training is master A. Posadas.
As a conductor, he studied with maestro José R. Pascual-Vilaplana and attended conducting courses with Jan Cober. He has received several awards such as: 1st Prize of the II International Competition ‘Ciudad de Torrevieja’ (2005), Young Composers Award ‘Hui, hui música’ (2006), 1st Prize of the I Ibero-American Competition ‘Villa de Ortigueira’ (2006), III SPC/IVM Prize, European Creation Musical Workshop Prize (2013) and the ‘Carmelo Alonso Bernaola’ Prize awarded by the SGAE-CNDM Foundation (2013 and 2014).
He gives master classes on composition and analysis, including the following: Conservatorio ‘Giuseppe Verdi’ of Milan, ACO Conducting Academy (Portugal), Corsi Internazionale di perfezionamento instrumentale (Spilimbergo, Italy), University of Louisville-New Music Festival (USA), IFOB (2019), WASBE Conference (2019), COMRED (2020).
