Abraham Cupeiro is a builder and multi-instrumentalist of ancestral instruments, recovering those lost to history and blending them into music that is foreign to them to create new sounds. He studied trumpet at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Madrid and completed a master’s degree in early music at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Cupeiro’s classical training contrasts with his versatility, as he has participated in folk, jazz and early music projects.
He is one of the few people who plays the carnyx, a Celtic trumpet from the Iron Age. He has also rescued the corna, a traditional Galician instrument played by his grandfather and depicted in the illuminated manuscripts of Alfonso X of Castile. His passion for organology has driven him to create a collection of over 200 instruments present in the show Resonando en el pasado (Resonating in the Past).
These mixes can be seen in the work Compromiscuo, with Belarusian accordionist Vadzim Yukhnevich, as well as in works written specifically for him, such as Wladimir Rosinskij’s Concierto-misterio (Concert-mystery) with the Galicia Symphony Orchestra.
His discography begins with Os Sons Esquecidos (Warner Classics, 2017), an album recorded with the Royal Philharmonic of Galicia. Later, he published Pangea (Warner Classics, 2020) with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and his latest album, Mythos (Loire Records, 2024), also with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
In cinema, Cupeiro collaborated with Ridley Scott in Gladiator II and on two major Netflix productions: Life on Our Planet (2023), by Steven Spielberg, and the biblical film Mary, with Anthony Hopkins, where he played 25 instruments. He also composed the soundtrack for the film María Solinha and collaborates with the company 14th Street Music, of Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer.
Cupeiro also engages in scientific awareness projects such as Neuston 3 and has collaborated in fashion shows with designer Adolfo Domínguez, consolidating his reputation as a versatile and innovative artist.
