Björn Bus was born in 1980 in Brunssum, in the south Netherlands, home to his musical roots. In 2004, Björn Bus completed his BA in conducting with honours under Alex Schillings at the conservatory in Groningen. That same year, he studied trombone under Harrie Ries at the conservatory in Maastricht. In 2005 and 2006, he studied baroque trombone with Wim Becu at the Musikhochschule in Aachen. He completed his MA in conducting, also with honours, in 2010 with the internationally-renowned conductor Jan Cober at the conservatory in Maastricht. But Björn Bus’s education did not end there, as he attended scores of masterclasses in conducting.
His talent soon began to be noticed, and his participation in renowned conducting competitions brought him further recognition. In 2005, he placed second at the EBBA (European Brass Band Association) competition in Groningen. At the WMC (World Music Contest) in Kerkrade in 2009, he won the bronze baton, working with the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy.
Björn Bus is now the General Artistic Manager of WMC (World Music Contest) in Kerkrade. He conducts the Dutch Customs Orchestra, the Baden-Württemberg Wind Orchestra (DE), Harmonie St Joseph Sittard (NL) and Harmonie St Jozef Kaalheide-Kerkrade (NL). He is also a Board member of WASBE (World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles).
Björn Bus often works with well-known national and international orchestras. He is a sought-after guest conductor with the Royal Military Band Johan Willem Friso, the Barcelona Municipal Band, Rundfunk-Blasorchester Leipzig and the Conservatorium Maastricht Symphonic Wind Band. He actively teaches masterclasses and workshops, and is frequently invited to act as a juror at various international competitions.
