Formed in Barcelona in 2014, the Cosmos Quartet has established itself as one of the most appealing string quartets on the current chamber music scene. Their performances have been widely acclaimed by critics who describe them as honest, elegant, expressive and captivating.
The quartet’s training includes the European Chamber Music Academy (ECMA), where they studied under tutors Hatto Beyerle and Johannes Meissl. They also attended the University of Hannover with Professor Oliver Wille and participated in masterclasses with renowned musicians such as Rainer Schmidt, Alfred Brendel, Jonathan Brown, Patrick Jüdt, Alasdair Tait, Krzysztof Chorzelski, and David Watkin, among others.
They have been awarded first prize in the Irene Steels-Wilsing Foundation Competition in Heidelberg and the BBVA Montserrat Alavedra Chamber Music Competition, as well as third prizes in the Joseph Joachim International Chamber Music Competition in Weimar and in the Carl Nielsen International Chamber Music Competition in Copenhagen.
They regularly perform in Spain’s leading festivals, cycles and auditoriums, including the Barcelona Quartets Biennial organised by the L’Auditori de Barcelona, the Liceo de Cámara XXI at the National Music Auditorium in Madrid, the Granada Festival, the Schubertiada in Vilabertran, Ibercamera Girona, and many more.
Internationally they have been invited to play at Wigmore Hall in London, the Paris Philharmonie, the Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels (BOZAR), the Konzerthaus in Berlin, SWR in Cologne and the festivals Streichquartettfest in Heidelberg, Musik Plus in Innsbruck, Gent Festival van Vlaanderen in Belgium, East Neuk Festival in Scotland and MUSIC4L-MENTE in Portugal.
Their interest in contemporary music has led to premières and performances of works by composers such as Raquel García-Tomás, Juan Magrané, Octavio Rumbau, Mauricio Sotelo, Benito Casablancas, Jörg Widmann, Bernat Vivancos, Manuel Rodríguez Valenzuela, and Montserrat Lladó, among others. They have also participated in various concert series, including the Sampler Series at L’Auditori in Barcelona, the Series 20/21 in Madrid, and the “Out-Side” in Barcelona.
Of particular note are collaborations with Alexei Volodin, Juan Pérez Floristán, Varvara Nepomnyashchaya, Cuarteto Quiroga, Luis Claret, Arnau Tomás, Fernando Arias, Erica Wise, Jonathan Brown, Miquel Ramos, Katharina Konradi and Konstantin Krimmel.
They have released 2 albums on the Seed Music label with works by Haydn, Brahms, Beethoven, Raquel García-Tomás and Octavi Rumbau, and 2024 saw the release of a third album with the complete works for string quartets by Brahms.
The quartet’s instruments are specially made by the prestigious Barcelona luthier David Bagué.
