Born in Langreo, Asturias, Daniel Zapico directed his studies towards early music from a young age, specializing in theorbo at the Professional Conservatory of Music in Langreo. He completed his higher education with the highest honours at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya under Xavier Díaz-Latorre. Later, he earned a master’s degree in Musicology, Music Education, and Early Music Performance from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
His recent album, Au monde, has been highly praised by critics and audiences alike, receiving top accolades such as the Diapason d’Or, ffff from Télérama, and 5 stars from Pizzicato, Melómano, and Ritmo magazines, as well as nominations for the MIN Awards and the ICMA Awards.
As a founding member of the ensemble Forma Antiqva, he has performed at major festivals worldwide. He also regularly collaborates with La Ritirata (Josetxu Obregón) and the Belgian group Ricercar Consort (Philippe Pierlot), with whom he has appeared at prestigious festivals such as the White Light Festival at Lincoln Center in New York and La Folle Journée in Nantes (France), Ekaterinburg (Russia), and Tokyo (Japan). He works closely with artist Nina Laisné, and their collaboration has given rise to the new show Arca ostinata, a miniature opera featured in prominent French venues.
Daniel Zapico also collaborates with leading figures in the music world, including Leonardo García Alarcón (Cappella Mediterranea), Benjamin Bayl (Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra), Attilio Cremonesi (Orchestra of the Gran Teatro La Fenice), Andrea De Carlo (Ensemble Mare Nostrum), Maxim Emelyanychev (Il Pomo d’Oro), Riccardo Muti, Christina Pluhar (L’Arpeggiata), and Judith Steenbrink (Holland Baroque).
He has been honoured as “Asturian of the Month” by La Nueva España newspaper, “Group of the Year” by Radiotelevisión del Principado de Asturias, recipient of the “Asturian Music Awards,” the “Serondaya Award” for Cultural Innovation, and the “Gold Medal” from the European Forum Cum Laude.
