Javier Laso was born in Fribourg, Switzerland, in 1975. He studied piano at the Conservatory of Music of Salamanca (CSM) with J. J. Diego and J. Ponce, where he obtained multiple honourable mentions and extraordinary prizes in the elementary, intermediate, and higher cycles.
During this period, he received lessons from Professor Almudena Cano and masterclasses from professors such as Ramzi Yassa, Joaquín Achúcarro and Dimitri Bashkirov.
Between 1994 and 1999 he completed a postgraduate stay at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest with professors Rita Wagner, Férenc Rados and Péter Nagy, who left a definitive mark on his musical development.
He obtained several honourable mentions in competitions such as Frechilla-Zuloaga and Maria Canals, second prize in the María Orán Chamber Competition, and first prize in the Pedro Espinosa Piano Competition.
He has taught at the CSM of Salamanca and since 2004 he has been a piano teacher at the CSM of the Canary Islands; he combines his teaching activity with extensive performances as a concert pianist.
His recording work has been highly praised by critics, having recently obtained the nomination for the German Record Critics’ Award for his album dedicated to Schubert and Schumann (Eudora Records). He will soon release an album dedicated to 20th century music and another one in four hands with Josep Colom, both works for Eudora Records. The mention of his maestro Josep Colom is a given, due to his teachings, his capacity to inspire and the support given in recent years.
