Pilar Jurado is one of the most exceptional stars of European classical music today. Composer, singer, and orchestra conductor, she was the first woman in history to premiere her own opera, La página en blanco, at the Teatro Real, for which she is also the author of the libretto and performs one of the leading roles.
Her repertoire leaps with surprising versatility from early music, in collaborations with Jordi Savall and Christophe Coin, to contemporary music, performing works by international composers including Pierre Boulez, Luciano Berio, Franco Donatoni, Brian Ferneyhough, Gérard Grisey and Unsuk Chin.
She has performed with the Symphony Orchestras of London, Strasbourg, Madrid, and Barcelona, the Orchestras of Catalonia and of Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu, and also with the Spanish National Orchestra, the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, the RTVE Orchestra and Choir, the Ensemble Baroque de Limoges and the Orchestre National Avignon-Provence, among scores of other ensembles.
As a composer she has premiered more than 120 works and has received numerous commissions from important institutions.
She has had a distinguished career in the field of cultural management, and is the only Spanish artist who has been a keynote speaker at a session of the European Parliament. She has been a member of the Spanish National Council of Performing Arts and Music and of the Ministry of Culture’s State Council of Stage Arts and Music, as well as an advisor and member of the AIE Permanent Committee and the president of SGAE. She is currently on the Board of Directors of the Academy of Performing Arts and chairs the European Academy of Voice, and the Culture and Patronage Committee of the Zaballos Foundation.
