ENRIC PALOMAR: Tanzbilder (2023) 15′ – World Premiere, work commissioned by Barcelona Clarinet Players
Enric Palomar (Badalona, 1964) is one of the most emblematic contemporary composers of what we could call stylistic eclecticism. In his work production, symphonic, chamber, and operatic compositions, you can find traces of jazz, flamenco, ethnic music, and ancient music. These elements blend with his study of authors like Falla, Gerhard, Ligeti, Adès, and Abrahamsen. This mixture is evident in the piece that the BMB (Barcelona Symphony Band) will premiere today with the Barcelona Clarinet Players. Tanzbilder (Dance Pictures) is a sonorous allegory of five famous artworks throughout art history that share the theme of dance: Les trois danseurs (1925) by Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), Danseuses bleues (1890) by Edgar Degas (1834-1917), Upa-Upa. La danse du feu (1891) by Paul Gauguin (1848-1903), La Danse (1909) by Henri Matisse (1869-1954), and Baile a orillas del Manzanares (1777) by Francisco de Goya (1746-1828). Sound, dance, and painting are expressed with the lights and shadows of the band’s sonic palette and the solo clarinet quartet, drawing influences from visual arts such as flamenco and the music of Juan Vásquez (1500-1567). Everything converges into a sonic portrayal of dance through Palomar’s stylistic mirror.
