DANIEL FREIBERG: Latin American Chronicles. Jazz Clarinet Concerto (2015) 19’
Instrumentalist Paquito D’Rivera, a versatile musician who exudes a charming naturalness and displays a refined technique formed over many years of experience, performs a concert for clarinet and band created by the Argentinian maestro Daniel Freiberg (Buenos Aires, 1957) called Crónicas latinoamericanas (Latin American Chronicles). Commissioned by the WDR Radiophonic Orchestra of Cologne, this concert is once again an example of the fusion of jazz, traditional music and symphonism. Its three movements – ‘Panorámicas’, ‘Diálogos’ and ‘Influencias’ – evoke rhythms such as the malambo, the vidala or the chacarera in the midst of a jazz language designed here for band, solo clarinet and the accompaniment of drums and piano. According to The New York Times, Freiberg’s work presents ‘symphonic ambition, complexly structured explosions of colour’.
