JOHN RUTTER: Requiem (1985) 35′ – National premiere of the version for band
A requiem for the deceased, created by a composer who envisions the joyful transcendence after life. John Rutter (London, 1945) is one of the most well-known authors of liturgical music in the current landscape. His work stands out for its lyrical qualities and meticulously crafted and idiomatic sonic ambiance. In his “Requiem” (1985) for soprano, choir, and orchestra—today performed in the version for band by Paul Noble—five sections of the requiem mass (“Requiem aeternam,” “Pie Jesu,” “Sanctus,” “Agnus Dei,” and “Lux aeterna”) are interwoven with two English texts corresponding to Psalm 130 (“Out of the depths I cry to you”) and Psalm 23 (“The Lord is my shepherd”). Unlike other requiem masses, this music invites us to seek eternal light filled with lyricism and hope. The composer dedicates the work to his father (who passed away a year before its composition) and turns the experience of grief into a poetic exercise rich in vocal and instrumental colors.
