Program
With Knknighgh (pronounced as knife), North American composer and trumpeter Nate Wooley introduces a radical new take on the classic free jazz quartet tradition, inspired by the minimalist poems of Aram Saroyan. Using a simple 13 bar theme, Wooley wrote short fragmentary loop compositions that could be triggered by a simple auditory cue by anyone in the band, making this a form of composition by committee. This forces the players out of their comfort zones and gives the musical narrative in its own dialectic. Nate Wooley, considered to be one of the most original and experimental contemporary jazz trumpeters there is, leads a quartet made up of some of the most outstanding improvisers of the New York new music scene.
