Program
Sampler Sèries and the OBC starts Sónar 2018 with In C, by American composer Terry Riley. In C is one of the major works of minimalist music, and was an aesthetic response to the academic serialism of the 60s in the United States. The OBC will perform this open score under the artistic direction of renowned conductor and percussionist Brad Lubman. The work, formed of 53 short, numbered musical fragments, was originally written for an indefinite number of musicians. Each musician performs, in order, the 53 written fragments with a certain degree of freedom, interacting randomly with each other and following a score patterned with tonalities. The result is an impressive sound mass of events that develop over the constant pulse of the C note.
