Repertoire

Franz Schubert: Die schöne Müllerin (The fair miller-maid), D. 795 (1823) 65’‎

Artists

Andrè Schuen, baritone
Daniel Heide, piano

Program

Despite his desire to become an operatic and symphonic composer, Franz Schubert’s songs for voice and piano are his most important legacy. The fusion of musical elements with the literary depth of the poems is absolute, with a wide range of emotions, feelings and images, and the piano and the melody are the warp and weft of a unitary fabric.

The fair miller-maid is one of the first lieder cycles to narrate a unitary and self-contained story, with a dramatic and high-flying approach. Schubert was inspired by Wilhelm Müller’s set of poems of the same name, published in 1821, although he eliminated or modified some of them to strengthen the narrative power of the story, composing a total of twenty songs. Some of these maintain the traditional strophic form —strophe-return with musical repetition—, while others are true examples of the durchkomponiert style or through-composed song, without return or repetition. In this story, with the protagonist’s passion for the miller’s daughter, we are accompanied by baritone Andrè Schuen and pianist Daniel Heide, regulars of the Schubertíada de Vilabertran festival and great connoisseurs of Schubert’s work.
