Program
Philip Sparke, one of the world’s leading band composers and conductors, is the focus of this season’s Retrat d’Artista. The commissioned work Hymn at Twilight is, unarguably, one of the star attractions of the programme, in addition to Symphony No. 2, dedicated to Savannah, the US city in the state of Georgia that has fascinated the musician ever since he first visited it
Three Washington Statues takes us on a visit to three statues, all located in the capital of the United States, in memory of three important historical figures. They are the statues of Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King and Duke Ellington. Spirit of Andalusia is a short piece evocative of sounds typically associated with Spanish music, based on the rhythms of jotas and flamenco music, while Moving Heaven and Earth is a theme and four variations of the fragment “Quando coeli movendi sunt et terra” from Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem.
