Programme

Aged just 22, Blai Gumí was chosen as the double bass soloist with the Bavarian State Opera, where he became the youngest member of the orchestra. This concert will feature the premiere of Danses concertants for double bass and concert band, written for the occasion by clarinettist, conductor and composer Albert Gumí, who is also the soloist’s father.

The concert closes with an appearance by the students of the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu, who will take to the stage alongside the Barcelona Symphonic Band. Part two includes a selection from The Planets by Gustav Holst. Written at the height of World War I, this suite depicts the character of each of the planets and their astrological traits, although Earth and Pluto are not included, the latter not having been discovered at the time of writing. The extraordinary and breathtaking sound universe created by the English composer made a great impression and had a considerable impact on future film music.
