Program
Käthchen, the daughter of a blacksmith from Heilbronn, and Kunigunde, Baroness of Thurneck, fight to win the heart of Count von Strahl. Love, hate and revenge succeed one another in a drama that takes place in the Middle Ages, which Heinrich von Kleist premiered in Vienna in 1810. Composer Bert Appermont transformed the tale into an original work for symphony band, with extraordinary skill in conveying the protagonists’ emotional moods through music. The score includes a melody that is very popular in Catalonia: the 16th century pavane Belle qui tiens ma vie by Thoinot Arbeau.
PROGRAMThe works by Goorhuis and McBeth were also specially written for band: the first evokes the contrast between two feelings, passion and tenderness, while the second conjures up the courtly festivities or masquerades held centuries ago in Italy. Old Wine in New Bottles by Jacob, written for a limited number of instruments, reinterprets four popular English songs.
