Program
The Ninth is more than the Ode to Joy, more than the fiery tempo of the second movement, and more than the beauty of the adagio. The Ninth is one of the most momentous works in the history of music. Not only that, the Ninth is much more than the Anthem of Europe. It is now 195 years since its first performance and still the Ninth continues to be re-invented, from risqué readings such as that of Stanley Kubrick in A Clockwork Orange to the symbolism it offers as the anthem of a Europe brimming with contradictions or the food for thought that it gives us as a community looking to the future. The innovative theatre company Agrupación Señor Serrano, under the musical direction of our Principal Conductor, approaches it with a critical look at the significance of the Europe of the past, present and future.
