Programme
American composer Amy Beach (1867–1944) had to break countless taboos and social conventions in order to carve out a place for herself in the deeply conservative US music scene. Her catalogue of compositions includes more than 170 works, including chamber music for various instruments, vocal and symphonic music. She was an admirer of Beethoven and his “Ghost” Piano Trio in D Major, and this concert by the Fortuny Trio contrasts Beach’s work with that of the German musical giant with a performance of another trio that Beach wrote as a fully mature composer in 1938. The Beethoven trio’s epithet alludes to the possibility that the material was previously intended for an overture to a performance of Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
