DOWNLOAD THE PROGRAMME HEREReferences and self-references –such as the musical signature DSCH, quotations from his own works, and revolutionary songs– permeate Dmitri Shostakovich’s Quartet No. 8, always with the ambiguity and distance that characterise chamber music, below the radar of the Stalinist regime.
In a deliberate breaking of boundaries, Beethoven wrote Quartet No. 15 in five movements rather than the usual four, with the third movement constituting almost an entire quartet in itself.
