Program
Composer Dora Pejačević introduced orchestral song (Orchesterlied) to Croatian music. She wrote in an independent musical idiom, following the romantic ideal, without abandoning tonality at a time of radical upheavals, typical of the generation of the turn of the 19th century. This sonata for cello and piano, despite being composed in 1915, was unknown until its premiere in 1923, shortly after the untimely death of the composer. The piece consists of four movements: an allegro moderato with a cantabile main theme that develops dramatically; a scherzo (allegro) in triple metre with bright colours; an adagio sostenuto of a melancholy nature which traces a rising and falling line; and an allegro comodo, full of harmonic details and rhythmic surprises.
Cellist Irma Bau and pianist Irina Veselova are known as DeLIS Duo. Their programme, entitled Jo sóc música, is dedicated to reclaiming the history and music of 19th and 20th century composers.
The biting cold outside that penetrates the bones; the harrowing sound of a bell tolling in a dull tone, announcing that which is feared most; a melancholy, light landscape, like the gentle breeze or the water of a river. These poetic images, suggested by three haiku by 17th and 18th century Japanese poets, are what Josep Maria Guix seeks to evoke with his refined music of minimal gestures, which portrays the same concentration of form as the literary genre which provided the original inspiration.
