ProgramME

With almost five decades of experience, the Takács Quartet is one of the world’s most enduring quartets. During their long career, they have focused on the mainstays of the genre: Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms and Bartók. Haydn’s six quartets Op. 76 are known for their dramatic intensity, dense texture, virtuosity and symphonic conception. No. 4 is dubbed “Sunrise” because of the gentle ascending melody at the beginning, a prelude to the vigorous sections that follow. We will also hear the first of his pupil, Beethoven’s, three “Razumovsky” Quartets, Op. 59. The Takács recording of this series received a Grammy Award in 2003. Op. 59 No. 1 is outstanding for its melodic inspiration, emotional charge, mastery of development and counterpoint, as well as the prominence of the cello, making this quartet an iconic work in Beethoven’s catalogue.
