Programme
The Festival Bachcelona has established itself as one Spain’s most innovative and varied arts events. This concert at L’Auditori features the festival’s vocal and instrumental ensembles (Bachcelona Akademie Choir and Bachcelona Consort) alongside soloists who have been awarded the Salvat Bach Grant – young talent committed to championing the best Baroque music. They will be led by one of the great specialists in this repertoire, Scottish tenor and conductor Paul Agnew, offering us two cantatas separated by four decades in time, but with a common theme: they were both written for the inaugurations of municipal councils (Ratswahl). Both cantatas thus display an exultant and festive character and feature trumpets and timpani. Gott ist mein König (God is my King), BWV 71, is one of Bach’s earliest surviving cantatas. It was first performed in Mühlhausen in 1708, and its text contains a good deal of political symbolism. Lobe den Herrn, meine Seele (Praise the Lord, My Soul), BWV 69, was performed in Leipzig in 1748, just two years before its composer’s death.
