Programme
Vox clamantis (The Voice of One Crying Out) is a Latin poem of more than 10,000 lines about the human condition, written by John Gower at the end of the 14th century. This expression, which also appears in the Bible, is also the name of one of today’s top Estonian choral groups. The programme, conducted by Jaan-Eik Tulve, founder of Vox Clamantis in 1996 and an expert in Gregorian chant, comprises works by two contemporary composers from northern Europe whose work focuses on renewing sacred music without ever losing sight of the strategies of the mediaeval and Renaissance choral repertoire. The Estonian Arvo Pärt (1935), one of the world’s most popular living composers, has made the tintinnabuli technique his hallmark, while the work of Norwegian Henrik Ødegaard (1955) interweaves plainchant with the folklore of his native country. This musical and spiritual experience is brought to us by Vox Clamantis, who specialise in the performance of both composers’ work.
