Programme

The emerging Helix Trio, founded in Basel in 2022 and comprising three performers of Spanish origin, concludes this season’s Chamber Marathon with a focus on one of the greatest works for violin, cello and piano of all time: Trio No. 3 in C major, Op. 101, written by Brahms in his mature period. The explosive first theme brings together in just a few bars the best of the German chamber music tradition. In the second theme Brahms builds on the strange melancholy that characterises his lyricism. Shostakovich’s rhapsodic Trio No. 1, performed much less often than the second, is the work of a 16-year-old boy falling head over heels for his first love, Tatiana Glivenko. And in Slowly... in mist, Tarragona-born Josep Maria Guix (1967) emphasises the great influence that haikus have had on his artistic ideology. Three poems by Kobayashi Issa, with fog as a common thread, inspired these three delicate, subtle and refined miniatures for trio.
