Programme

One of this season’s tours takes the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra to the iconic Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, where they will present the Sinfonía efímera by José Río-Pareja, a composer born in Barcelona in 1973, who has been singled out for his “sensitivity and exquisite language of structural forms that are almost impossible to materialise”.

As at L’Auditori, Ravel’s creativity is being celebrated in different ways this year, including performances in chamber format, with the version for orchestra of his Violin Sonata No. 2 played by Yan Maresz, and the popular Tzigane. A demonic composition invoking traditional Hungarian music and circus-like acrobatics, it was commissioned by violinist Jelly d’Aranyi, who had worked with Béla Bartók.

The concert will conclude with Ravel’s orchestral version of Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky. The work traces an imaginary journey through landscapes that are never entirely fictitious, set in the borderline realm between wakefulness and sleep, where mental activity and the dream world are merged.
