Programme
The concert will open with a new work by Sílvia Lanao, commissioned by L’Auditori as part of the “Canta amb l’OBC” (Sing with the OBC) project. The young composer (Girona, 1995) admits to being fascinated by the exploration of colours and textures. After the performance of her work, two paradigmatic pieces from the classical repertoire will be heard.
The first is Dmitri Shostakovich’s Cello Concert No. 1, composed in 1959 for his friend Rostropovich, who premiered it the same year, conducted by Yevgeny Mravinsky. The second part of the programme features the symphonic suite Sheherazade by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, which he himself conducted in 1888, an expression of exotic fantasy in the form of stories told without words, through the suggestive power of sumptuous orchestral music.
