Programme
The Fantasy that Robert Schumann composed in 1853 is a work in line with the spirit of his earlier Violin Concerto, with filigrees abounding in even greater profusion.
More than a century later, Robert Gerhard’s Concerto for Harpsichord and String Orchestra – accompanied by percussion – is a superb example of the development of his musical language. Drawing on tradition, but looking to the future, it is a work with sounds inspired by the world of electro-acoustics.
In the second part of the concert, Richard Strauss’s majestic 1915 Alpine Symphony, narrates, through a series of sound images and recurring themes, the ascent to the mountaintops, a powerful experience encountered in the concert hall.
