Programme

Segel, completed by Swedish composer Lisa Streich in 2017, challenges audiences with its numerous silences and the disturbing magnetism of sounds that seem to emerge from nothingness.

One of Tchaikovsky’s best-known traits may be his taste for melodic development, inflamed by Romantic feeling. His Variations on a Rococo Theme is a technically challenging symphonic piece for cello that will be performed by virtuoso cellist Julia Hagen, born in Salzburg.

Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life) is one of Richard Strauss’s most celebrated symphonic poems, written in the late 19th century, with the notion of a “coming of age novel” (Bildungsroman) in the background. The piece uses a large orchestra with some solo violin sections to depict stages in the life of the protagonist.
