Program
In 1927, the Barcelona Symphony Band travelled to Frankfurt to take part in the International Music Exhibition, inaugurated on 11 June. Conducted by Joan Lamote de Grignon, it performed eight concerts, featuring a total of 26 different works, mostly by Catalan and Spanish composers. At the last concert, the well-known composer and orchestral conductor, Richard Strauss, led the band in a performance of his symphonic poem Don Juan, a work transcribed by Lamote de Grignon for the occasion.
The second work on the programme, Symphony No. 2 by James Barnes, was premiered by the Kansas University Symphonic Band. It is divided into three movements: an elegy, a series of interrupted variations, and a finale that ends with a spectacular, dynamic coda.
