Program
The appearance of these young performers is proof that the future is bright. Two budding soloists make their débuts with the Band performing current works, including one from renowned composer John Williams, with 51 Oscar nominations to his name.In 2002 Williams wrote the music for the Steven Spielberg film Catch me if you can. Not long after, the score was adapted as a concert for saxophone and concert band encapsulating the adventures of forger Frank, played by Leonardo di Caprio, who is on the run from an FBI agent, played by Tom Hanks. The programme includes other highly acclaimed North American composers, such as Bret William Dietz, also an accomplished percussionist whose work puts the soloist to the test with a wide and varied set of instruments, and Francis McBeth with a work that premiered 50 years ago and is already a true ‘classic’ in the modern symphonic band repertoire, fast pace and intense from the very first note. The concert opens with the spectacular “celebration” from British composer Philip Sparke, a work dedicated to “the virtuosity of the band and the optimism of the human spirit”.
