Program
Once again, the Band bids a fond farewell to the year under the baton of Salvador Brotons, with a programme that combines the most classical Central European music written for this time of year – where the music of Johann Strauss naturally has a rightful place – with a few surprises, such as the spirited Slavonic March by Tchaikovsky and the Festive Overture by Shostakovich.Russian composer Shostakovich also wrote the Piano concerto that the Menorcan Kiev Portella will play for us: a work that was originally dedicated to his son, Maxim Shostakovich, a brilliant virtuoso who performed it during his graduation in 1957 at the Moscow Conservatory. Despite the composer’s lack of confidence in the work, over the years it has become one of the most performed pieces and presents a formidable challenge for any pianist who dares to tackle it.
