Program
Brotons gets 2020 under way with a symphony programme packed full of works by the greatest composers of the European Romantic era. Highlights include hugely popular pieces by Weber, Dvořák and Saint-Saëns, alongside symphonic landmarks by the Russians Rachmaninoff and Glière.In 1927, the ballet The Red Poppy premiered with considerable success – and also controversy. Glière’s music included references to Western music such as the Charleston and the Foxtrot, as well as Russian tradition and heritage that the storyline and the popular Russian Sailors Dance demanded. The solo pieces are rendered by the bow of Benjamin Scherer, a German-Spanish violinist who has performed on numerous occasions in Catalonia, but who is collaborating for the first time with our Symphony Band.
