The National Youth Orchestra of Catalonia was founded in September 1993 under the name of Catalonia Youth Symphony Orchestra (JOSC) and in 1999, changed its name to JONC. Josep Pons conducted the orchestra from its creation until 2001, when Manel Valdivieso took over as artistic director. From the very beginning, JONC’s main aims have been to offer comprehensive orchestral training to young Catalan musicians and to play an active role in their professional development. In addition, the orchestra produces a cultural offering of the highest quality, for a wide audience, with a clear social and educational role.
