Program
In this programme, which has the Musikalische Exequien, Op. 7 by Heinrich Schütz as its central theme, we will go on a journey through the choral polyphony of different German composers up to the music composed during the era of J. S. Bach.Musikalische Exequien, Op. 7 was written upon the request of German prince Henry II of Reuss-Gera, and includes texts taken from the Old Testament, the gospels and Lutheran chorales. It was probably during the time Heinrich Schütz spent in Italy that he became interested in and able to compose music to capture the meanings and imagery of text, and to dramatise the emotions contained in it this way. This is one of the elements that most influenced other composers of subsequent generations, as we will see on this musical journey.
