What better to premiere our Russian musical rollercoaster ride than the last virtuoso masterpiece by Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky’s marvellous Third Symphony, a tribute to dance full of rhythm and colour. And, to increase the tempo, we have music from our resident composer, Hèctor Parra.Kazushi Ono invites you to climb aboard a rollercoaster of emotions with Tchaikovsky’s only symphony which, interestingly, the OBC had not performed before: a fresh and direct work which includes a polonaise and a waltz; authentic jewels in the work of the composer who started work on Swan Lake immediately after its premiere.
The last of Rachmaninoff’s great symphonic scores was his Concerto No. 4, which he had started in the 20s after attending the debut of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue but reworked it and reworked it again. Interpreting the piece is the indisputable soloist Leif Ove Andsnes, winner of a Gramophone Award for his interpretation of the Russian composer.
