From Monteverdi to Puccini, opera’s history was, unquestionably, Italian. The composer from Lucca set some veristic arguments to music that wowed the people of Barcelona just before Wagner came into fashion. La Bohème premiered at the Teatre del Liceu two years after its premiere and is the most recognized piece in his catalogue. Le villi has the allure of being the first work Puccini wrote, and La fanciulla del West the attraction of an American premiere.
DOWNLOAD THE PROGRAM HEREJordi Cervelló composed Les càrregues (The charges) based on the striking images of 1 October 2017 and, as he himself writes, the “outrage over what I experienced that day.” The contrast between the popular melody El testament d’Amèlia (Amelia’s testament) and the representation of the “evil” of A por ellos (Let’s get them), commemorate a wound that still hasn’t healed: violence exercised unjustly and gratuitously against the people. The concert closes with a short poem (Puigsoliu), originally for a cobla, one of the most inspired and beloved numbers by the musician born in Peralada, Joaquim Serra.
