Program
Carlos Ramón, the deputy director of the Symphony Band, proposes a very interesting programme that will reveal the range of sounds that can be produced by contemporary symphony bands.
Edward Elgar’s well-known Chanson du matin will be flanked by the final apotheosis of the Belgian composer Strens’ Danse funambulesque and the Vasily Kalinnikov’s Symphony No. 1 in a version for symphony band written by Cober himself. In spite of dying at a very young age, Kalinnikov’s talent was appreciated by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff, and his music takes us to the essence of Russian Romanticism, with inspired melodies and a distinct style.
