Program
Guitarist, composer and improviser Ferran Fages is one of the most lively and outstanding artists on the Barcelona experimental music scene. Llavi vell and What might occur, demonstrate the two distinct sides of Fages’s extensive production repertoire. Llavi vell, designed to be reproduced as loud as possible and on this occasion performed using a quadrophone format, is a sound mass built from layers of sound from the sounds produced by rubbing an arch in different positions on the strings of a guitar. On top of this unstable mass (almost a drone) a layer of disjointed overtones is formed, acting like a melodic pattern. What might occur is a rereading for acoustic guitar and sine waves of the piano piece Triadic Memories by Morton Feldman, that shows us the most raw and hidden side of Fages: approaching the guitar as a feeble instrument with few resources that places us within a sound perspective where silence sustains the musical discourse. Two works that explore the ways our sense of time is affected by sound resources and contrasting compositions.
