Mahler’s sixth symphony is one of the greatest symphonic landmarks of all time. According to the composer: “This work poses a riddle which will only be solved by later generations”.It is a broad-sweeping, intense, dramatic work, driven by an unavoidable sense of fate, but also drawing on the happiness of Mahler’s family life at that time, with themes dedicated to his wife Alma and their daughters. Alma said that the sixth was “the most personal of his works”. Mahler used it to effectively turn his interior world into music, revealing all to make us part of his vision of love, success, failure, joy and death. He worked on it for two years and finally, exhausted, wrote to a friend: “The sixth is finished. Me too”.
A prestigious career in the field of opera and symphonic music make Karl-Heinz Steffens one of the most acclaimed and versatile directors of the international scene. His debut with the OBC guarantees to listen to this work under one of the best batons of the moment.
