Mahler was certain about one thing: “To me, creating a symphony means constructing a world with all the technical means at one’s disposal. The symphony must embrace everything.”
After having constructed six ‘worlds’, and even though audiences were never particularly receptive to his monumental symphonies, he was determined to compose a seventh. Once again, he used an imposing orchestra and premiered the work in Prague. He received criticism from all corners but remained true to his ideas. The work consists of five movements and contains two fragments of ‘nocturnal music’, the true genesis of the work.
Markus Stenz is one of the most prestigious German conductors of the moment and is well-versed in Mahler’s symphonies. He currently conducts three orchestras on three continents: the Dutch Radio Philharmonic, the Baltimore Philharmonic and the Seoul Philharmonic.
