Finally, Barcelona can enjoy the monumental Mass by Leonard Bernstein, a highly unconventional work that combines the spirituality of liturgical texts with the theatricality of the American musical. The work arose from a commission by the young widow Jacqueline Kennedy for the opening of the JFK Center for the Performing Arts in Washington in 1971. Bernstein decided to compose a mass, but was soon seduced by the power of popular music and musical theatre. And thus a monumental work was born, with more than 30 vocal and instrumental pieces, an orchestra of more than 100 musicians, including rock instruments, keyboards, percussion, three choirs and a solo voice. The closing stages of the work, in the voice of the celebrant, are unequivocal: “The Mass is ended, go in peace”.
