Program
Our principal guest conductor returns to the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra with a programme that includes, of course, a work by Mozart and two of the greatest romantic composers: Clara Schumann and Mendelssohn. The Scottish symphony was inspired during the composer’s tour of the British Isles as a 20-year-old musical prodigy, who later turned his experiences there into music. He worked on the piece for over 10 years and it was the last symphony he composed. Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 is one of his most popular works, the second movement being one of the best known pieces of music in western culture. According to the French composer Olivier Messiaen, “it contains one of Mozart’s most beautiful melodies and possibly one of the most beautiful ever”. Dutch pianist Hannes Minnaar will lead us into the magical world of Mozart. Although she was one of Europe’s most acclaimed pianists, as a composer, Clara Schumann was always overshadowed by her husband Robert. The Barcelona Symphony Orchestra performs for the first time a piano solo that has lain forgotten for 150 years.
