Program
Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony is the most popular of the Russian composer’s 15 symphonies and one of the most performed symphonic works of the 20th century in the world. Its premiere in 1937 received a 40-minute ovation and served to restore Shostakovich’s standing following the criticism he had faced from the Soviet regime for making music that was “alienated from the people”.Lionel Bringuier, who last visited us in 2015, completes the programme with the characteristic Variations on a Rococo Theme for cello and orchestra, by Tchaikovsky. This is a direct and virtuoso work, replete with nods to the music of Mozart, and will be performed by Pablo Ferrández, the Spanish cellist with the greatest international renown. A work and a soloist brimming with elegance and good taste.
