Programme
He needed to reach a half century of life to publish his declaration of intent: ‘Every note is true’. But what is a true note? ‘A good note’, sums up Ethan Iverson. And of course, ‘the more notes you play, the greater the risk that there will be several that aren’t so good’, he concludes. True notes are found in Stravinsky’s ‘clear and simple’ scores, in the solos of Ornette Coleman, who ‘never played a note that wasn’t true’. At fifty, Iverson still does not believe he has attained total truth at the piano, ‘but sometimes it sounds pretty good’, he claims. The former member of The Bad Plus is one of the jazzmen with the deepest knowledge of jazz history and a music lover. His music benefits from all this, which is warmer than his solemn stage presence might suggest.
