Although the almost pop-like lyricism of Gorka Benítez is one of his trademarks, there is much more to his sound universe. Journalist Roger Roca said that he has ‘the soul of a rocker and the spirit of a txistulari’. And the fact is that this Bilbao native has never stopped being so in Barcelona: a rocker and absolutely Basque. And although he was a big part of the Basque scene, Benítez has long since established himself as a classic name in Barcelona jazz, as have his partners in this trio, guitarist Dani Pérez and drummer David Xirgu, in other words, a who’s who of those who determined the sound of jazz in Barcelona not long ago. Incombustible and timeless, Benítez is a storyteller, a narrator on the saxophone and flute of both small and large everyday stories.
