To speak of composer and artist Maryanne Amacher is to speak of sound in movement. Trained with Stockhausen, and having worked with John Cage and choreographer and dancer Merce Cunningham, it is not surprising that her work has revolved around the idea of the spectator not as a mere listener, but as an active participant in the true reality of sound.
One of the phenomena that Amacher has most studied and worked on is psychoacoustics, and as part of it, otoacoustics, which is based on the study of the sounds that stimulate the parts of our ears and hearing, from the cochlea to the hair cells.
In her work GLIA, Maryanne Amacher imagines the audience as a kind of interface, a system that connects the electronic world of sound with acoustics through otoacoustic emissions. An audience that, instead of sitting in the audience, will live an immersive experience standing among the musicians.
