Program
Director and composer Evan Ziporyn revisits what was Bowie’s last album, with a symphonic tribute including songs such as Lazarus, Blackstar and Girl Loves Me. The concert for cello and orchestra, created for the revolucionary cellist Maya Beiser, exploits the similarities between the cello and vocal melodies to great effect. Ziporyn is an American composer of post-minimalist music who draws inspiration from classical music, avant-garde, world music and also jazz. The ‘David Bowie Is’ exhibition will be hosted by the Museu del Disseny from 25 May and is a retrospective exhibition devoted to David Bowie, one of the most influential figures from the last century.
On 13 July, as part of a programme of activities linked to this exhibition, the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra (OBC) will perform in the Bowie Symphonic concert, which features adaptations of songs from Blackstar, the last album by one of the most important voices of 20th century music.
The show, which premiered last March in the United States at the Massachusetts Kresge Auditorium, will feature the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra. The guest soloist is Maya Beiser, the Israeli-born American cellist who has revolutionised cello performance with her eclectic and avant-garde repertoire which has pushed the performance boundaries of her chosen instrument.
