Program
The emotional and intense poem Canigó is the highlight of this programme that evokes the essence of the land from the very first beat. Barcelona composer Fèlix Martínez Comín took the most striking excerpts from the epic poem by Jacint Verdaguer and adorned them with fresh, airy and romantic music. The most well-known passages are included, from the journey over the Pyrenees by the queen of the fairies and the fight against the Saracens, to the death of the young knight Gentil at the hands of his uncle Guifré. The bells of the monastery of Sant Martí del Canigó are also an important feature of the work. Sometimes the bells ring out for victory and sometimes they bring sounds from the past, as in the case of Homenatges by Brotons a reminder of Xirinacs and Puig Antich. The most upbeat music is provided by Agustí Borgunyó, expressing the joy of a celebration full of rhythm and colour, and by Rafael Grimal, with his Marxa commemorativa.
