Leonard Bernstein’s most popular music kickstarts the commemoration of his centenary. The love affair between Maria and Tony and the clashes between the Sharks and the Jets translate into the mosaic of rhythms and colours that made this film the best of 1961.
Original version with Catalan subtitles.West Side Story ranks fourth in terms of the number of Oscars received by a film: it won 10 statuettes, including one for best film and, of course, for best music. And, as regards musicals, it is undoubtedly the biggest award-winning musical of all time. The instrumentation for the film required triple the number of musicians as the original theatre show did, making it even more of a spectacle, and it made songs like Maria, Tonight and America immortal. Jerome Robbins, the choreographer and director, released more than 30 Broadway shows, but it was West Side Story that secured his place in the golden history of the genre.
