Program
It is exactly one hundred years since Joaquín Turina wrote the colourful and popular “Sinfonía Sevillana” (Seville Symphony). It premiered in Madrid to great success, but nothing could compare to the reception it obtained in Paris. Since then it has been considered one of the best Spanish works of the 20th century. The Iberian programme is rounded off with the Portuguese music of Jorge Salgueiro, born near Lisbon and composer of dozens of works for concert band, one of the highlights being the sensational Concerto for tuba. His compatriot Sérgio Carolino has taken it upon himself to perform it around the world, revealing outstanding virtuosity and musicality, and also a uniquely cheerful disposition and sense of musical acrobatics.
